André Téchiné’s sensitive feature portrays familial isolation, in this award-winning drama. Ailing matriarch Berthe (Marthe Villalonga) decides to live with her daughter Emilie (Catherine Deneuve) at her beautiful home in Toulouse. Despite Emilie's apparent successes, she is emotionally detached and struggling to maintain a connection with her husband and her children (including her real life daughter, Chiara Mastrionni). A visit from her brother Antoine (Daniel Auteuil) heightens tensions as he comes into conflict with Emilie's husband. Secrets of the past are revealed and culminate into a violent conclusion. The cinematographic use of seasons aptly compliments the development of Téchiné's characters, as does his and Pascal Bonitzer’s candidly sensitive script. Deneuve and Auteuil deliver performances worthy of their towering stature as her glacial detachment collides with his neurotic passion.
