Cinémoi is happy to compliment our Alain Delon season with an interview with the highly distinguished film professor Ginette Vincendeau (King’s College London, previously at Warwick University).
She has published a range of works, including The Encyclopaedia of European Cinema, Stars and Stardom in French Cinema, as well as a biography on Jean-Pierre Melville (Jean-Pierre Melville: An American in Paris, 2005). In this major study, Vincendeau also discusses Melville’s work with Delon in the film noir trinity, Le Samouraï, Le Cercle Rouge and Un Flic.
These masterpieces cemented Melville-Delon as one of the great French cinematic duos, with two of their collaborations featured in our Delon showcase.

We can thus think of no better person to provide context for our Delon season than Professor Vincendeau, who was awarded an Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1998 for services her to French culture. Her interview is a must-see for Delon fans and for those looking to gain more insight into French cinema during the 60s and the Nouvelle Vague; a movement in which Delon was regarded as an outsider due to his impossibly good looks. However, internationally he commanded widespread audience appeal, as did the breath-taking climes of Southern France as seen in Plein soleil and La Piscine.
Professor Vincendeau also delves into Delon’s legendary and troubled relationship with Romy Schneider, co-star of La Piscine and another iconic talent showcased by Cinémoi.
